She nodded. "Sounds good", she whispered. "I could use something to eat." David nodded and started to leave the room. "David?"
"Yes?" he said, turning back to face her.
"Thank you."
"No problem. I can understand this is a lot for you to take in and a hell of a lot for you to deal with, plus, we're gonna be stuck together for a while. We might as well find some ways to enjoy each other’s company."
She smiled and nodded. "I’m going to get a quick hot shower then head down stairs. I should be there in a few."
"Alright. I'll see you in a few, then." He left the room. After he'd ordered dinner for them, he went into the living room to watch some TV. Sports were out of the question. Not because Irian didn't like sports, but because her son wasn't going to be there after all. David had been looking forward, just a little bit, to having a little boy around to share his love of sports... especially baseball. David was a hard core Chicago Sox fan and nothing would ever change that. He hoped one day to have a son that he could share that with. Maybe with Irian? He dared not think about it. She was his ward. He had to protect her. That's all there was to it. If he allowed himself to feel like this was anything but a duty, then he would surely go insane. She's not even interested in me anyway, he thought to himself. I've got to get my shit together. He sat forward and covered his eyes with the palms of his hands, his slender fingers curving over his bald head. What the hell was he going to do?
