Chapter 27

David walked onto the bus to find Brie asleep. She napped whenever she could, though whatever she was dreaming would scare the hell out of her and wake her again. It took anywhere from thirty minutes to two hours to get her calmed down.

He kicked his boots off and carefully climbed in bed with her. Malachai was in the lounge area watching Uncle Mikey try to beat Call of Duty 4. David was usually in there with him, but he was just too damned tired today.

He settled in to the bed and wrapped an arm around his pregnant wife. He knew they weren't legally married, but he'd gotten so used to thinking of her that way that he just could stop the train of thought. She was, as far as he was concerned, his wife. Fuck what anyone else had to say about it.

He was just starting to drift off when she started whimpering in her sleep. "Here it comes", he thought. "I'm gonna wake up enough to see if she says anything." He laid there and listened.

"Nooooooooo!" she screamed. "No, David, no! No, no, no, no, no! I love you, don't leave me."

Was she afraid he was going to leave her and the kids high and dry like Malachai's birth father had? Fat chance of that one happening. He'd wanted kids for a while and now he was finally getting the family he wanted. He would be damned if he was going to leave her.

She started sobbing, quietly as she clutched something invisible to her chest. What was going on? He was starting to worry.

Her eyes flew open and she screamed. Mike, Dan, and John ran back to see what was going on. David held her and rubbed her back carefully. "Shh... I'm here, Brie. I've got you. I'm not leaving you. Hush... " he said as he rocked back and forth.

She lifted her head from his shoulder. "I saw you die, not walk away. I held you in my arms as you bled to death and no one did anything."

His eyes widened. "OH MY GOD! Is that what you've been dreaming all this time?" She sobbed into his neck as she nodded. He looked at the guys. "We need to have a chit chat with HQ."
