"Well, I'm awake now. I kinda needed another couple of hours, but I guess I'll take a nap later."
"Go back to sleep, baby", David said. "We'll deal with this when wake up again."
"'saint happenin'", Brie said. "Mikey's news on Mattie snapped me awake."
David took a deep breath. "Ok. I would prefer that you tried to get some more rest, but if you can't get back to sleep now, you WILL take a nap later. No questions asked."
"And miss the important day that we have ahead of us?"
David tried to think of what she was talking about, and drew a blank. "What the hell are you talking about?"
"Don't tell me that you forgot today is your son's birthday, David Michael. I'll have to beat you", she said with a smile.
"Oh, shit, that's right. It's Malachai's birthday today, isn't it?"
"Yep, our boy is turning eight today."
"Holy fuck. Now, I feel old." He laughed and rubbed his hands over his face.
"We need to go tell our oldest happy birthday. Let's get up."
"But I don't wanna", David joked. "I thought I was a grown- up."
"Either we go tell him, or he's gonna come in here and jump on us."
"Shit. God damn it! Fine." He began to untangle himself from her when the door opened again to the child in question. He got a running start and jumped right in the middle of the bed.
"GOOD MORNING MOM AND DAD!!!" the boy exclaimed.
"Morning, Malachai. What's got you so excited this morning?"
"Dad, you don't play stupid very well, so don't try", Malachai said.
"I'm not playing stupid. I have no idea why you'd be so excited to turn eight years old. I wasn't."
"You lie!"
"No, son, I'm not."
"Yeah, he is", Brie whispered to Malachai. "I talked to Uncle Ben about it a week ago and he said that your dad was a total annoyance when he turned eight."
"When did you hear from Ben?" David asked her.
"A week ago. He called me to see how everyone was doing."
David nodded. "Ok. You told him we're all doing well?"
"Yeah, he can't wait to meet his niece and nephews."
"We can't wait to meet Uncle Ben, either." Malachai said. "Now, get up. Aunt Tina is making my birthday breakfast and you two HAVE to eat with me!"
